The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of connecting psychosocial and contextual-related variables in understanding employment outcomes among former vocational rehabilitation(VR) customers with blindness or low vision by applying Livneh’s(2001) psychosocial adaptation to chronic illness and disability(CID) model. A literature review regarding employment outcomes for people with visual impairments is presented. Five broad, multi-faceted constructs (i.e., customer satisfaction, acceptance of vision loss, degree of functional vision, primary source of support, and previous work experience), that address current public policy, service delivery trends, and psychological adaptation to disability, are then examined. Finally, Livneh’s(2001) psychosocial adaptation to CID model is discussed and applied.
