The purpose of this study is to find the effects of brainstorming in story discussion activities on
young children\'s self concepts and language abilities.
The subjects of this research were 40 young children who attended H kindergarten. The 20 children
of the experimental group were allowed to have brainstorming in story discussion activities and the
20 children of the comparative group had teacher-lead story time as ordinary. The process was composed
of preliminary study, pre-investigation, experimental treatments of 5 weeks, and post-investigation in
order. The measuring tool for children\'s self concepts were the Self-concept Assessment by Lee,
Hyun-kyung(2004) and the measuring tool for children\'s language abilities was the language ability
assessment of the K-WPPSI(Korean-Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence).
The results of this study can be summarized as follows.
First, the young children in the experimental group which had brainstorming made a statistically
significant difference in children\'s self concept and such lower factors, physical, social, emotional,
cognitive self-concepts.
Second, the young children in the experimental group which had brainstorming made a statistically
significant difference in children\'s self language abilities and such lower factors, common sense,
comprehension, vocabulary, commonness, sentence abilities.
In conclusion, it is found that brainstorming in story discussion activities has influence on children\'s
self concepts and language abilities. This suggests brainstorming can be effective teaching-learning
methods for children\'s self concepts and language abilities.
