The purpose of this study was to develop the group art therapy program for improving the upper
elementary school students' self-concepts and peer relationships and to examine the effect of that program.
Positive self-concept formation and peer relationships in the upper elementary school are particularly important
because thereafter, they affect one’s happiness, personality formation, and sociality development. Accordingly, a
program was developed through reconstruction of art and moral subjects in an upper elementary school. And
Then, it was applied to participants and examined its effectiveness was measured. Participants were 14 upper
elementary school students in Gyeonggi Province. They included 7 students in the experimental group and 7 in
the controlled group. The program was conducted with performed to the experimental group. The results are as
follows. First, the group art therapy program improved self-concepts and peer relationships in the experimental
group. Second, K-HTP and KSD evaluation showed that the overall picture's features, level of interaction, level
of cooperation, and facial expressions of the people in the participants’ drawings were significantly improved in
the experimental group. These results lead us to the conclusion that the group art therapy program has a
positive effect on improving the upper elementary school students' self-concepts and peer relationships. It seems
important for future research to test the generalizability of the findings to elementary school students.
