이 연구의 목적은 묵자 영어교과서와 비교하여 점자 영어교과서의 시각자료 점역실태를 분석함으로써 적절한 점자 영어교과서 제작을 위한 시사점을 탐색하는 것이었다. 분석대상은 장영희 등이 저술한 두산출판사의 중학교 1학년 묵자 영어교과서와 이를 점역한 점자 영어교과서였다. 시각자료 유형은 사진, 그림, 기타 시각자료로 분류하였고, 시각자료의 기능은 필수, 보조, 장식으로 분류하였다. 각 단원은 도입, 듣기, 읽기, 말하기, 어휘 등 12개 영역으로 구분하였으며, 점역형태는 완역(정확 및 오류), 수정(적절 및 오류), 생략(표기함 및 표기하지 않음)으로 구분하였다. 분석 결과 중1 묵자 영어교과서에는 시각자료가 총 859개 제시되어 있었는데 자료 유형별로 보면 그림 75.7%, 사진 15.8%, 기타 시각자료 8.5%였고, 자료의 기능별로 보면 필수 35.3%, 보조 39.8%, 장식 24.9%였다. 중1 점자 영어교과서의 점역실태를 분석한 결과 총 859개의 시각자료 중 생략 78.1%, 수정 18.3%, 완역 3.6%였으며, 단원영역별로 보면 도입과 말하기 영역의 시각자료는 모두 생략되어 있었고, 자료 유형별로 보면 완역 또는 수정 된 것이 사진 8.1%, 그림 14.4%, 기타 시각자료 89.0%였다.
The purpose of this study was to compare the visual materials in regular print English textbook with those in braille English textbook. The regular print English textbook was authored by Chang et al. and published at Doosan; the braille English textbook was transcribed in the Braille Library of Taegu University. The seventh-grade regular print English textbook presented a total of 859 visual materials, including 136 (15.8%) photos, 650 (75.7%) drawings, and 73 (8.5%) other visual materials. In terms of the functions of the visual materials for teaching English, the textbook consisted of 303 (35.3%) imperative, 342 (39.8%) auxiliary, and 214 (24.9%) decorative materials. The braille transcription patterns of the visual materials were as follows: verbatim transcription 3.6%, modifications 18.3%, and omissions 78.1%. The braille transcription patterns of the visual materials in terms of their function revealed that, for the 303 imperative materials, only 9.6% were verbatim transcribed, 37.0% modified, and 53.4 omitted; that for 342 auxiliary materials, 0.3% was verbatim transcribed, 13.2% modified, 86.5% omitted; and, that all the decorative materials were omitted.
