The character is personal peculiarity. However there is a feature that is generated from relations with
others and community. Character development is carried out in the dynamic interaction between the
personal, others and community. A program that is based on this point of view is required in early
childhood education.
The purpose of this study is to examine effects of character education program for young children’s
self-leadership and social competence. In order to examine the effects, we conducted the character
education program 16 times in 10 weeks that based on the categories of the understanding of personal,
others, and community. The subjects of this study were 5-years-old 40 children lived in Seoul(20 in the
experimental group and 20 in the comparative group). Before and after the application of the program,
pre test and post?tests were carried out by young children’s self-leadership and social competence.
The tools used in Choi ja-yun's(2009) Scale of the child self-leadership and Peace, Clark, Crase(1979)'s
ISCS(Iowa Social Competency Scale) were modified and employed. And the statistical processing was
done with ANCOVA using the SPSS program.
The result of this study is as follow. In conclusion, we have learned that the character education
program had positive influence on increase young children’s self-leadership and social competence. This
suggest that character education program improve children's self-leadership and social competence.
