Recently consulting-supervision has been emerged as an alternative of traditional
supervision in Korea that has negative impression in educational community for a long time.
As consulting-supervision is still beginning stage it is meaningful to get information by
observing another similar program. This study aims to understand mentoring programs in
the United States and to find some implication for consulting-supervision of Korea. Some
elements of consulting-supervision overlaps with mentoring programs in terms of teacher
supporting systems and enhancing expertise of teachers. It will give some valuable meaning
to consulting-supervision by close observation mentoring programs in the area of mentor
selection process, mentor-mentee matching, training mentors, compensation, assessment, and
standardization process.
Several implications are suggested. First, consulting-supervision needs systematic selection
process and training program for consultants. Second, it needs careful consideration in
matching up between a consultant and a client. Third, consulting- supervision should be
separated from various evaluations. Fourth, the area and subjects of consulting-supervision
have been expanded to all aspects of education and educators. Those expansion should be
segmented and focused by each area, and thereafter select and train professional consultant
in each area and subject. Fifth, organizational consideration is needed for meeting between a
consultant and a client otherwise it’s impossible to schedule to meet each other because of
heavy burden of workload already they have.
