The purpose of this study was the implications for searching for effective strategies
by analysis of operation and special education teachers’ awareness on visual art
subject in schools for students with intellectual disabilities. Also this study suggested
improving on art education in consideration of unique learning style or characteristic
of students with intellectual disabilities. The research target was 35 public schools for
students with intellectual disabilities and 135 teachers. And the data processing was
frequency analysis and Chi-square(χ²) verification.
As a result, in this study, first, the operation of art subject is inadequate
environment, shortage of major teachers, inexertion for professional development, etc,
in schools for students with intellectual disabilities. So professional and effective art
instruction on accord with interests and needs for students with intellectual disabilities
are difficult.
Second, special education teacher in schools for students with intellectual disabilities
being aware which art education purify emotions and improvement of the expressive
function for students with intellectual disabilities. And they constructing the art
instruction contents in consideration of interests and need for students. But special
education teachers lack professional about art education, so they hope art education
specialist system, expansion of opportunity for training, improvement of teaching
methods according to disabilities character.
Last, based on these results, this study suggest improvement of art education for
the students with intellectual disabilities.
