The existing field-experience learning App on Changdeokgung Palace simply aims to deliver
knowledge-based information without incorporating the learning goals of historical education
and key contents. Also, the learning activities included in the APP are arranged so that it is
possible to learn without going to the field. This study developed a mobile application scheme
for field-experience learning on Changdeokgung Palace, one of the UNESCO World Heritages
in Korea, by supplementing aforesaid limitations of the existing APP.
The key characteristics of mobile learning activities proposed in this research are as follows.
First, they incorporate core learning concepts such as ‘Role of the State in the Joseon Dynasty’ (a),
‘Specific historical incidents’ (b), ‘Restoration of life history in the Joseon Dynasty’ (c), ‘Features of
traditional architectures’ (d), ‘Traditional worldviews, (e), and ‘Changes by period’ (f). Second, the
sense of realism was maximized by making it possible to accomplish missions on the field. Third,
advanced mobile functions including Chinese character writing, photographing, and Drag-and-drop
were utilized to make possible mission accomplishment by location. Fourth, teachers are able to
check on the progress of students’ mission accomplishments using mobile devices.
During the Field-experience learning, students can experience a long and diverse thinking
process, such as exploring and inferring problems in the course of implementing missions, and
cooperating with other students by working in groups. The development of a teaching-learning
scheme is required to apply field experience in education.
