Ovjectives : The purpose of this research is to verify the effects of art therapy to check
the changes in body, namely changes to tension relaxation and stress response, by applying
drawing-centered and crafting-centered art therapy to children with psychopathology.
Methods : The target of this research are 15 children with psychopathology in the 7 to
15 age range. The program of this art therapy was applied from January 3rd of 2004 to
February 28th of 2004 with drawing-centered and crafting-centered therapy for 40 minutes
respectively. And we measured ECG signals before and after art therapy on the same
condition and method.
The checking tool of this research was CANS 3000 (Central and Autonomic Nervous
System Analyzer), which is developed by Laxtha for the analyzation of autonomic nervous
system by synthetically diagnosing a person's brain(CNS) and heart(ANS).
Conclusions :
First, art therapy is effective in changes of activity of a child with psychopathology.
This conclusion was verified by the changes in activities of autonomic nervous system,
which indicates promoting of tension relaxation of body and becoming more vital state to
increase immunity against stress and to increase positive emotion by the results of decrease
in HRV and increases in LF and HF.
Second, drawing-centered art therapy is effective in changes of activity of a child with
psychopathology. This conclusion was verified by the changes in activities of autonomic
nervous system, which indicates promoting of tension relaxation of body through the
process of energy storing and preservation, and therefore, becoming more calm state to
increase immunity against stress and to increase positive emotion by the results of decreases in HRV and LF, and increase in HF.
In therapeutic viewpoint, LF is activate in the early stress stage. This indicates that this
kind of activity is effective in the early stress stage as autonomic nervous system requires
the activation of HF to maintain homeostasis in response to the activation of LF.
Third, crafting-centered art therapy is effective in changes of activity of a child with
psychopathology. This conclusion was verified by the changes in activities of autonomic
nervous system, which indicates promoting of tension relaxation of body and becoming
more active state to increase immunity against stress and to increase positive emotion by
the results of decreases in HRV and increases in LF and HF.
In therapeutic viewpoint, LF loses its control in the chronic stress stage. This indicates
that this kind of activity is effective in the chronic stress stage as autonomic nervous
system requires the activation of LF, which gives vitality to body, in response to losing
control of LF.
Judging from the results of this research, art therapy applied to a child with psychopathology under the bodily tension and excessive stress circumstances is effective in promoting tension relaxation of body, in increasing immunity against stress, and in promoting positive emotion by expressing the self through the process of creativity and communication.
