The aims of this study are to inquire Educational Drama․Theatre\'s pedagogical meaning, to theorize
curriculum basis, and to design the teaching methods by suggesting the examples for applicative model. To
reach these aims, I have to make a clear how this discussion could be approached appropriately, and how
it is possible to use it for the actual class field. For this discussion, I synthesized various fields of drama education, educational drama․theatre, drama therapy and so on. And for empirical basis, I quote the field
researches and other examples in therapy, class, plays.
In the chapter II, I discussed the nature and the meaning of educational drama․theatre. It started with
the form that applicate the general theatre to pedagogical procedures. This form and application of
educational drama․theatre in pedagogical situation just started the class as the students\' participation of
the theatre. So it could be inappropriate to education. However the intrinsic aims of educational drama․
theatre is for internal growth of students. In this point, the nature of educational drama․theatre is very
meaningful. Educational drama․theatre includes format of ‘drama’ and ‘play’ as well as ‘theatre’. The
aim of educational drama․theatre teaches students through various methods like drama and play contrary
to the theatre education that is for teaching professional theatre.
Educational drama․theatre has an aim not for training the professional theatre skills but for reaching
educational purposes. The examples of following aims of educational drama․theatre are all for the whole
man, achieving self-realization, filling the artistic sensibility, growing physical performance and sense organs,
causing interest and motivation by performing the various casting role of actors.
Educational drama․theatre have dimensions of edutainment, lived experience education, and conversation
education. Educational drama․theatre have a typical format of the edutainment that could be a play itself
possible, cause interest, and make a active participation in educational situation. In addition, It have a
meaning as a method for lived experience education that seeks the first-hand experience through body and
sense organs and could lead to abstract meanings in the first-hand experience. Educational drama․theatre
direct learning through body. This educational drama․theatre\'s intent is typical way of ‘learning by
doing’ Dewey said.
Lastly, educational drama․theatre have feature as education through language and body. So educational
drama․theatre depends on the word as firsthand communication and the body language as secondhand
communication. Educational drama․theatre could improve students\' communication and talk ability by
satisfying all the educational feature that could make a body equilibrate with language. In this context,
educational drama․theatre suggests us possibility that could grow students as a whole person by solving
the communication problem between teacher-student and student-student, and improving the truly meaning
communication ability.
In the chapter Ⅲ, I discussed an application and a practice of educational drama․theatre. Above all, I
treated the aims and purposes, educational contents and learning experiences, and the process and
evaluation of educational drama․theatre. And in this background, I made the basement for practical
discussion of educational drama․theatre. The educational aims of educational drama․theatre could be
first, developing personality, second, developing sensibility of social community, third, creation of wide knowledge, and forth, understand of theatre. To achieve this educational aims, it should be something that
contribute to realize the whole person growth.
Educational drama․theatre have two dimension. One is Educational drama․theatre as a single subject,
and the other is as a integrated subject. First, the educational drama․theatre as a integrate subject is to
use for reaching the subjects\' purposes. If this idea could be integrated with other subjects like Korean
and Social science, educational drama․theatre could be the critical instrument to reach the educational
aims. Second, it is the educational drama․theatre as a independent subject. In this study, I discuss the
educational drama․thetre as a part of artistic group and Social science group. Because a theatre is
involved in art naturally, students could raise their aesthetic sensibility through educational drama․theatre.
Under the same reason, theatre make students encounter the social problems empirically. At this point,
educational drama․theatre could be used as an art subject and a social science subject.
In the chapter IV, I discuss the various ways of educational dram․theatre and how educational dram
a․theatre could be made an application to the class situation. To discuss a practice a practice and effects
for educational drama․theatre, this chapter found sorts of educational drama․theatre and pointed practice
and effects of various methods and examples. The typical examples of educational drama․theatre are TIE,
Creative Drama, Play Making, Role Playing, Forum Theatre, DIE, Children Theatre, Dramatic Play,
Participation Theatre and Developmental Drama. I explained technical problems of educational drama․
theatre for understanding the way of sorting concretely. Representatively there are Improvisation, Teacher in
Role, Role, and Hot Seating.
To teach educational drama․theatre, teachers could use the literature and movie texts as well as
original theatre text. First, there are three kinds of literatures; play(the written text), novel, and poem.
Play could be the media for educational drama․theatre because of its nature that is intrinsically for
theatre. the Novel also could be the media for educational drama․theatre, for it have a rich factors of
narrative. Poem could be the unique media that implied lots of things. Second, the genre of movie could
be the interesting and understanding easily media. Because drama and movie have lots of similarities,
movie could be more easily used for the format of educational drama․theatre class more easily.
Today, Education is criticized about failing to raise the whole personality of students. It cause
hierarchical relationship between teacher with student, so the truly opened communication was broken
between each other. In general, everybody think education is very hard and serious things, so it is boring.
Teacher and students could be get to make opened and educative communication channel and to
participated in pedagogical situation using the educational drama․theatre.
In this respect, educational drama․theatre could be the alternative education from the traditional
education that have caused lots of problems. Not just a desire, really desirable education that could lead the student to the harmony of internal growth and social cooperation.
