This study aimed to identify time use patterns of first year students and how these patterns are related to individual and university characteristics. Samples include 22,410 students from 127 universities. This study used latent profile analysis (LPA) to examine a typology of how first year students spend their time either on or off campus. A multinomial logistic regression analysis was employed to investigate to what degree individual and institutional characteristics influence the probability of which latent classes a student belong to. The study found that there exist five distinctive subgroups in terms of time-use patterns: less-engaged, volunteers, socializers, parents, and engaged. Second, some of predictors were found to affect students’ time use patterns. The study suggests that first year students in Korean universities have different experiences during university in terms of time use. Considering that more than 80% of first year students belong to the less-engaged group, it is very important to develop programs to ensure students learn how to use their time in a educationally meaningful way.
