We are living in a culture characterized by a search for perfection. Mass media seduces people to have a perfect body, perfect face, perfect health, perfect clothes, and even perfect faith. There are some good aspects to perfectionism, which has resulted in great scientific and artistic achievements. This paper, however, discusses negative aspects o f perfectionism which has a destructive and crippling effect in many lives. Symptoms of perfectionism are common in obsessive-compulsive personality disorders. What are the underlying thought patterns and fears of perfectionism? What are the toots of perfectionism? What are the differences between perfectionism and excellence? After attempting to answer these questions, this paper presents some practical strategies for change and healing. Learning to face and deal honestly with hurts and disappointments, and with guilt and bitterness by experiencing the redemptive love of God in Christ is discussed as an altern ative to perfectionism. Experiencing self-acceptance and self-love in a community of faith is presented as the ultimate solution to perfectionism.
