This research paper focuses on analyzing the development process of narcissism, which is considered to be cultural characteristic of modern society, from the perspective of John Bowlby’s attachment theory. The phenomenon of narcissism, which is characterized as excessive egocentricity, is intensified as time goes by and it causes troubles of relationships in all areas of life and religious belief. In this research, I am going to discuss three topics regarding the following two questions: What is the reason behind these ego–centric narcissism and how we need to approach to cure. First, I am going to explain that narcissism is a phenomenon in which the infant with abnormal anxiety due to the loss of self–love becomes obsessed with oneself in order to fill lack of self–love. Second, I am going to delve into three types of insecure attachment separately, show that the result of insecure attachment is narcissism and emphasize that narcissism is carried on through generations. Lastly, I am going to conclude this thesis by proposing that it is when Christian counselling can hold anxiety and deprived self–love as a secure base, the person with narcissism can be cured. In other words, we can gain an insight that re–experiencing of relationship is needed.
