성경은 자기애의 양면적 측면을 말하고 있으며, Kohut 또한 자기애의 건강한 측면을 강조하며 병리적 자기애를 설명하였다. 자기애 성향의 양가성은 일반인에게나 상담자들에게나 ‘자기애’란 구성개념에 대해서 많은 혼동을 불러일으킨다. 그 이유로 자기애 성향에 현상적으로 다르게 보이는 여러 유형이 있고, DSM에서 제시된 자기애적 성격장애에 대한 기술이 소위 외현적 자기애에 집중되었다는 점, 그리고 자기애에 대한 가장 중요한 대상관계이론가인 Kohut과 Kernberg가 매우 다른 접근을 보이고 있기 때문이라고 말할 수 있다. 본 연구는 연구자들의 임상경험을 토대로 문헌을 중심으로 진행되었다. 그 결과 대상관계 이론가 중 Kohut과 Kernberg의 자기애 구념과 귀인과정 설명과 처치법에 대한 차이를 분명히 하였고, 두 사람의 이론을 통합적 관점에서 기독교 상담현장에 어떻게 적용할 수 있는지를 논의하였다. 또한 자기애 성향의 교인과 목회자에 대한 이해가 필요하기에 교회와 기독교인에게서 보이는 자기애적 문제와 Kohut의 핵심 구념 중에서 거대자기와 자기대상, 변형적 내재화, 그리고 Kernberg의 공격성과 방어기제 등을 영성의 관점에서 고찰하며 기독교적 상담 적용을 제안하였다.
The Bible mentions positive and negative both sides of narcissism, and Kohut explained pathological narcissism with the emphasis of positive aspects of it. These ambivalent features of narcissism make people and theorist confused to grasp constructs of narcissism. It has several reasons; 1) there are many variations of narcissism, 2) NPD is only focused on overt narcissism, 3) Kohut and Kernberg have different approaches toward it. This study was done through the review of the literature. As a results, it was clarified that there are significant differences between constructs of narcissism, attribution processes, and therapeutic methods of narcissism of Kohut and Kernberg. Also, it was discussed how to apply these understandings to counseling situation. Furthermore this study proposed that because the church needs to figure out narcissistic believers and church leaders, it is important to understand pathological problems of narcissism and the concepts related to narcissism such as selfobject and grandiose self from the viewpoints of spirituality and Christian counseling as well.
