The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of divergent expression found in Debussy’s and to develop methods for its application in music appreciation education. Accordingly, the study first examined the background of 19th-century France and Debussy’s as well as its educational value for music appreciation. Next, the characteristics of divergent expression present in Debussy’s were analyzed. Based on this, a two-session music appreciation lesson plan for high school students was developed. The research results showed that, first, Debussy’s is a work that reflects the historical and cultural background of 19th-century France. Second, Debussy’s expresses divergent characteristics centered on form and characters. Third, a two-session appreciation lesson plan was devised by applying the characteristics of divergent expression found in Debussy’s . Through this study, it is hoped that high school students will understand the characteristics of divergent expression in Debussy’s and achieve the learning objectives for music appreciation.
