This case study is to examine the impact of storytelling art therapy on
self-expression and self-esteem for child with selective mutism. The subject
for this case study is a 13-year-old boy, committed on G Art Therapy
Institute, diagnosed with selective mutism. The subject had 20 sessions in
total and each session was held for 60 minutes once a week from May 8th
2010 to April 23rd, 2011. Self-expression, self-esteem, K-HTP, DAP were
used for analyzing the data and qualitative analysis was used. Every session
in pre- and post test was held on a child with selective mutism. Research
findings are as follows. Firstly, the storytelling art therapy was effective for
child with selective mutism to explore his repressed emotional expression and
improve self-expression, through processing of express his emotion toward
his family. Secondly, the storytelling art therapy was effective on his
improvement of self-esteem by having his positive self-image, development
of relation skills, and having insight of self-emotion for the child with
selective mutism. Thirdly, the child tried to engage on communication and
emotional exchanges with other people according to the eyes in K-HTP test.
In DAP test, the two arms represented social interaction and the smiling face
demonstrated improvement of positive sense of self. There fore, the case
study shows that the storytelling art therapy had a positive impact on
elevating self-expression and self-esteem for child with selective mutism.
