Grounded in the 2x2 achievement goal framework(Elliot & McGregor, 2001), the purpose of this study was
tested examining the hypothesized between approach and avoidance(mastery and performance) goals, challenge
and threat appraisals of sport competition, and positive and negative emotions included self-esteem. The
subjects were 63 children(boys:339, girls:30) who lived in G city and J province. The scales used in this study
were 2x2 achievement goal scale which made by Conroy et al.2003), cognitive competitions appraisal scale
which made by McGregor & Elliot(2002), self-esteem scale which made by Rosenberg(19650, and positive and
negative emotion scale which made by Diener & Emmons(1984) and all scales examined results were as
follows; first, there were significant correlation between approach goals and challenge appraisals, avoidance
goals and threat appraisals, and negative emotions, challenge appraisals and self-esteem, and positive and
negative emotions. There were significant correlation between threat appraisals and negative emotions. In
analysis of structure equation, theoretical model in this study was supported because all indices(χ2=915.82,
df=316, Q=2.89, GFI= .91, AGFI= .91, RMSEA= 055) showed higher than norms of those. In analysis of paths,
mastery approach → challenge appraisals, positive emotions, mastery-avoidance → challenge appraisals, threat
appraisals, performance-approach → challenge appraisals, self-esteem, positive emotions, performance-avoidance
→ challenge appraisals, threat appraisals, negative emotions, challenge appraisals →self-esteem, positive and
negative emotions, threat appraisals → negative emotions paths were significance.
