The purposes of this thesis are 1) to reduce feedback about errors by finding the types and
causes of errors in addition and subtraction, and 2) to help establish effective teaching methods
by finding defects in the process of student\'s thoughts.
The following research questions are set up.
First, what types of errors in addition and subtraction happen to elementary third graders?
second, what is educators\' effective teaching method on the types of errors in addition and
subtraction?
The subject of this research was 300 students in the third grade of B elementary school
located in Jeonju, Chollabukdo.
The analysis of error types along with test paper interview and observation tendency
The result are as follows.
First, in case of addition, error types are 4 groups; errors of restructuring, figure confusion,
ignorance of algorithm, and mixture of plus and minus. In case of subtraction, error types are
5 groups; errors of regrouping, handling of number 0, subtraction, ignorance of calculation
order, and mixture of plus and minus.
Second, given each guidance element on error types, most types of errors are figure values,
cardinal number systems, and operation algorithm. 2 students who made a typical error were
selected respectively in addition and subtraction.
