The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of instruction for vocational skills with
mentoring on the rate of the independent performance and positive work behavior for people with mental retardation. Multiple probe design across subjects was used to evaluate the skill of assembling task performance. Three persons with mental retardation were instructed in community vocation rehabilitation institute with 5 sessions per week for 8 weeks. Follow-up data were collected two weeks after the termination of the intervention. The results of this study are as follows. First, instruction for vocational skills with mentoring increased the rate of the independent assembling task performance of people with mental retardation. Second, instruction for vocational skills with mentoring increased the rate of the positive work behavior of people with mental retardation. Third, for maintenance stage, the rate of the independent assembling task performance and the rate of the positive work behavior have been maintained similar to the level of intervention period. The conclusion was made, based on indept discussion on the result obtained and the literature reviews. In conclusion, instruction for vocational skills with mentoring is an effective intervention for people with mental retardation in acquisition of assembling skills and positive work behavior. Additionally, implications and recommendations for further researches have been suggested.
