The purpose of this study was to exam the effects of disability awareness program
and inclusion on children\'s attitude toward students with disabilities. For that purpose,
the elementary school students of one general education classroom took an awareness
education program for 10 weeks and the other general education classroom students
were educated with a student with mental retardation in inclusive environment. The
results revealed that the disability awareness program was more effective than the
inclusion experience. The students who took the disability awareness program showed
more positive attitudes toward students with disabilities than the inclusion experience
and the differences continued after 6 months later. Based on theses results, the
researcher suggested some ideas about how to improve students\' attitude toward
disabilities and develop the better inclusive environment.
