The purpose of this study was to find out the role of adult education for the
adolescent immigrants to successfully get adjusted in Korea. Supporting the
adolescent immigrants, especially in early adult period(19-24), to adjust and live
in Korea is a critical mission in adult education. To find out the implication of
adult education to support adolescent immigrants, the researchers not only
investigate the advanced research and fields, but also interview the person in
charge of adolescent immigrants' education.
The findings were as follows. First, the purpose of the educational program
turned out to be prevention of social issues, strengthen vocational capability,
building up the social relations, and empowerment to deal with the community
issues. Second, the contents adolescent immigrants need to adjust were Korean
language, identity, psychological adjustment, vocational guidance which have
proceeded. Also we found out that the interviewee felt the necessity of sex
education, social interaction, etiquette used in Korea, social participation, and
parent education. Third, the method to run the educational program for
adolescent immigrants turned out to be various according to the purpose and
contents of the education or the readiness of the learners. We found out that
the educational program for adolescent immigrants to be effective should be
developed in long-term and systematic perspective.
The result imply the role of adult education as providing long-termed and systematic program for adolescent immigrants to grow up independently. The
purpose of adult education should be in building up the vacational competency,
participation in social matters, networking, and relationship. Following the aim of
adult education for adolescent immigrant, the contents and method of the
program should be set up. When the role of adult education for adolescent
immigrants is accomplished, they could build of positive identity, live as mature
citizen, and contribute to Korean competitiveness.
