In this study, students' conceptions of acid-base and neutralization reaction have been
investigated by 11 items of written tests before and after Chemistry Ⅱ class in the 3rd grade
of high school . The topics include the dissociation of acid-base, the property of salt solution,
the equivalent amounts of base to neutralize the stronger acid and weaker acid, pH of
solution at equivalence point, concentration and strength of acid solution which are
categorized as strong acid-base and weak acid-base. The 34 misconceptions are found about
the conception of acid and base, neutralization reaction. These various students' misconceptions
or undifferentiated conceptions of acid-base and related concepts result from the lack of the
properties of electrolytes, the stability of chemical species in aqueous solution, the hydrolysis
and the chemical equilibrium concepts. These various students' misconceptions are useful and
helpful for the development of teaching strategy about acid-base and neutralization reaction in
high school chemistry.
