This ethnographic study attempted to examine the typical way of 5-year-old children\'s
group discussion and the roles of young children in group discussion for cultivating a
sense of morality. The results of this study are as follows. Throughout the course of
group discussion, children made various suggestions concerning situations which appeared
on pictural materials. Afterwards, through mutual discussion, they agreed upon a certain
situation of moral conflict. The children tended to consider the circumstances or
standpoints of the picture\'s characters, and in the course they often thought over their
own experiences in connection with other\'s experiences. In accord, they presented
diverse solutions for the troubled situation, and also decided on promises for everyday
life. Within the course of group discussion they assumed the role of a playwright who
dramatizes contexts using pictural sources as his/her material, or the role of a mature
discussion participant, supporting other participant\'s opinions and exchanging influence
with them. They also played the role of a lawyer who helps understand and defense other
people\'s standpoints or circumstances, or the role of the jury who make impartial
judgements for the sake of social justice.
