Using data from children referred to the counseling center, this study classified children's disorders
into developmental, emotional, and behavioral disorders and investigated differences of the classified
disorders according to the children's sex and age. Furthermore, this study analyzed children's
personal, parenting environmental, and parent's environmental characteristics related to children's
disorders, and examined their significant characteristics, which provided clinical data to assess
children's disorders and to develop treatment strategy. Subjects of this study were 119 children
who received or was receiving the counseling in clinical settings. Data were analyzed by
frequency and percentage using SPSSWIN program.
This study revealed that children's sex, age, and personal characteristics(physical, verbal, and
cognitive developmental characteristics, IQ score, and behavioral characteristics) showed apparent
differences among classified disorders. Under circumstances, those were important factors to assess
children's disorders. Moreover, parenting environmental characteristics(planing pregnancy, psychological
status during pregnancy, breast-feeding period, and early parenting history) and parent's
environmental characteristics(dating period and correspondence in parenting between parents) were
common factors in all the classified disorders rather than describing the classified disorders. Therefore,
theses results suggest that the personal characteristics of children are important factors to assess
children's disorders, and both parenting environmental characteristics and parent's environmental
characteristics are also necessary to develop treatment strategy.
