This study is aimed at identifying what competences are required for account executievs. This study was performed as an exploratory step of developing the job competency scales for account executives. In order to extract preliminary items, in-depth interviews were conducted for 12 directors of account executives from seven advertising agencies. Based on 92 items extracted from in-depth interviews, 200 account executives were surveyed. Exploratory factor analysis was performed and finally 30 items were identified. The results of factor analysis for the final 30 items revealed that an eight factor solution appeared to be the most desirable in terms of interpreting the construct. Extracted eight factors were 'will and attitudes toward job', 'management of human relationship with client', 'inquiring mind','proactive problem solving', 'open-minded thinking', 'self-initiated', 'communication & cooperation with peers', and 'persuasive communication ability'. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that items of each competency factor were successfully discriminated. And factor structure in estimating the construct was validated. Implications, limitations and directions for further research were discussed.
