본 연구는 우리 사회의 공적인 영역에서 영유아들을 양육하고 있는 보육교사들의 어머니역 할하기에 관한 목소리를 들음으로써 이들의 교사역할과 어머니역할 수행에 대한 지원 방안을 모색하기 위하여 필요한 자료를 마련하는데 목적을 두고 실시되었다. 본 연구의 참여자는 서 울⋅경기지역에 위치한 보육시설에 근무하고 있는 교사 7명이었으며, 2006년 9월부터 11월까지 심층면담을 통해 보육교사들의 실제적인 목소리를 들을 수 있는 자료를 수집하여 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 보육교사들은 어머니로서의 역할을 수행하는 과정에서 많은 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 이들은 어린 자녀를 맡기기에 마땅한 영아보육시설을 찾는데 어려 움을 겪었고, 오랜 근무시간과 근무시간의 불규칙성, 동료교사와의 갈등, 복지제도 활용의 어려 움 등으로 자녀양육의 과정에서 가중된 어려움을 감내하고 있었다. 둘째, 보육교사들은 어머니 역할을 수행하기 위하여 나름대로의 다양한 지원 방안을 활용하고자 시도하고 있었으나 이 과 정에서도 많은 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 셋째, 보육교사들은 어머니역할을 제대로 수행하기 위하 여 다양한 대처 방안들이 사회적 차원에서 적극적으로 모색될 필요가 있다고 요구하고 있었다.
This study examined early childhood teachers' mothering as it occurred in their private life. The study involved interviews with 7 teachers who were also mothers or future mothers. Results indicated that there was a conflict between mothering and teaching and the overwhelming dual workload generated as the mother-teachers shouldered the responsibilities of teaching at child care centers and mothering at home. The participants of this study also experienced much difficulties in the process of seeking and applying various support networks for their mothering at home. Respondents revealed the level of organizational effort required to keep their responsibilities as teachers and mothers flowing. Both mothering and teaching required high levels of energy in the physical, affectional, and cognitive sphere, so it is needed to search for methods to support early childhood teachers' mothering in various aspects. Especially it is needed to provide pro-family environment and mood in their spouses' work places and our entire society to support early childhood teachers' mothering.
