For Leibniz the concepts of time, change and duration are highly idealized. According to him, time is not a basic entity; it is defined as the series of the synchronous sets forming a whole individual concept. Change is defined by that an element of a synchronous set is not comprised in another successive synchronous set. Duration is defined as the connection of the synchronous sets bounded by a whole individual concept. The created individual does not simply move from left to right along a straight line, the representation of time. Instead, the individual is extended in time and covers the whole time axis. What occupies each point of the time axis is not a whole individual, but one of the synchronous bundles of attributes making up the individual. Change consists of that each synchronous bundle of attributes contains at least one different element. An individual lasts insofar as each bundle of attributes is bounded by the entity.
