이 연구는 1980년 중반 이후 한국사회에서 심화되고 있는 학력인플레이션 현상을 탐구의 대상으로 하고 있다. 특히, 한국사회의 고질적인 문제 중의 하나로 지적되고 있는 지역 감정 혹은 지역격차라는 요인이 어떤 방식으로 교육에 반영되고 있는가를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구에 따르면, 학력인플레이션은 지역 간 분화라는 특수한 양상을 보이고 있는데, 이는 서울과 지방간의 분화라기 보다는 서울과 경상도를 중심으로 한 지역과 전라도와 충청도를 포함한 지역 등 두 지역으로의 분화로 나타나고 있다. 그런 데 이와 같은 학력 인플레이션의 지역간 분화는 각 지역에 소재하고 있는 대학들의 학력격차에 기인하고 있는 것이 아니라, 지배엘리트의 충원과정, 산업화과정, 고용관리 과정 등에서의 지역 격차와 관련을 맺고 있다고 볼 수 있다.
This study is to examine the relationship between the regional differentiation of academic-credential inflation and the regional difference. In this study, academic credential inflation can be explained by the successive devaluation of academic credential. The labor market for college graduates can be divided into the two parts, depending on the area in which colleges are located: the stable labor market area(in Seoul City and Kyungsang Province) and the unstable labor market area(in Cholla Province, Choongchung Province, and Kangwon Province). That division is formed on the basis of the discriminative industrialization, the baised employment of the power elites, the unbalanced development policy etc. Thus, the regional differentiation of the labor market for college graduates influences on the patterns of academic-credential inflation. As in the labor market for college graduates, the academic-credential inflation is divided into the two parts, depending on the area in which colleges are located.
