기든스는 ‘제3의 길’을 통해 고전적 좌우를 극복할 뿐만 아니라 인류문명의 새로운 도전으로 세계화(globalization)의 문제를 적극적으로 사고함으로써 종래의 제3의 길로서는 상상할 수도 없는 세계주의적(cosmopolitan) 민족, 정치, 담론, 정체성 등을 과감히 이야기 하고 있다. 이러한 ‘제3의 길’은 블레어 집권 후 영국 노동당의 사회복지정책 기조를 이루었다. 이러한 ‘제3의 길’은 좌파와 우파의 이데올로기를 극복하자는 것이었으나, 신자유주의와 구좌파 사회민주주의 모두 ‘제3의 길’은 없다는 반응을 보이고 있다. 우파의 신자유주의는 ‘제3의 길’이 온갖 악의 근원인 복지국가에 여전히 집착하고 있으며 황당한 꿈과 부질없는 감상에 지나지 않는다고까지 비판한다. 서유럽의 전통 좌파, 특히 마르크스주의자들은 ‘제3의 길’이 신자유주의에 굴복한 선거전략이요, 비현실적인 신기루에 불과하다고까지 말한다. 이러한 좌파와 우파의 비판 속에서도 ‘제3의 길’은 계속 논의되고 있다.
According to the book of ‘The Third Way’, Giddens is drastically asserting cosmopolitan nation, policy, argument, and identity that can’t be explained with ‘the third way’, which had been used one before Giddens’ theory by not only overcoming a fixed concept about a Left and a Right, but also the new challenge for human civilization by actively thinking to the globalization problem. ‘The Third way’ became a keynote of social welfare policy in the United Kingdom after the seize power of Blair. A purpose of this, The Third Way, was to overcome ideology of a Left and a Right, but there are no positive responses of it from neoliberalism and the old Left democracy. Neoliberalism of the Right criticize that ‘The Third Way’ is still obsessing on a welfare state which they believe as a root of all evils, and it is even nothing more than a ridiculous dream and a useless thought. A traditional Left of the Western Europe, especially Marxists claim that ‘The Third Way’ is only an election strategy and is just an unrealistic mirage. Although these arguments keep going between the Left and the Right, ‘The Third Way’ is continually discussing.
