In our rapidly changing world, the demanding competencies required of potential human resources
highlight the need for excellent quality in teaching and learning at higher education institutions.
Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTL) in colleges and universities, therefore, becomes an
essential organization that can play strategic roles in providing vision, training and innovation in
education. Because CTL serves a variety of challenging functions, securing highly capable human
resources, that is, professional research fellows, is at the core of its organizational success.
Accordingly, analyzing the job should be a priority for CTLs if they are to achieve their desired
outcomes. The aim of this study was to develop a job model for research fellows at CTLs.
Utilizing the Developing a Curriculum (DACUM) method, the job was defined and analyzed,
resulting in the identification of 10 duties and 71 tasks. The significance, difficulty, frequency, and
criticality were also evaluated for each of the tasks. The derived duties included ‘program planning,’
‘program development,’ ‘one-time program management,’ ‘long-term program management,’
‘e-learning program management,’ ‘supporting tool production for teaching and learning,’ ‘program
evaluation,’ ‘professional development,’ ‘administrative duties and ‘supporting duties for the
University.’ The majority of key tasks fell under the planning and evaluation duties which should
be performed based on their analytic research. Although the management duties accounted for
almost half of the total duties, these duties were associated with a marginal number of key tasks,
suggesting that managing programs is one of the less essential duties of research fellows.
Discussion includes implications of the findings, along with further suggestions for CTLs and
higher education.
