The purpose of this study was to improve parenting competence by developing a
parent empowerment program that could strengthen parent’s self-confidence in
child-rearing and performing ability of parental role and enhance the positive function of
family, and then applying it to the couples of multicultural family who had young
children, thus examining its effects on parental satisfaction, marital adaptation and marital
satisfaction. The program was applied for 2 hours in a session/per week and it was
carried out in 8 sessions with parents from multicultural families. Based on such
variables as parental satisfaction, marital adaptation and marital satisfaction, pre-and
post-test were compared. Study findings are as follows: the program had positive
influence upon parental satisfaction. In particular, the program presented a significant
difference in such sub-variables of parental satisfaction as parent-child relationship and
parental role conflict. Second, the program presented a statistically significant result in
marital adaptation. Third, the program had positive influence upon the improvement of
marital satisfaction. In conclusion, this study’s program seems to be able to present very
effective results in the actual scene of social welfare as a support program for parent
empowerment in the early stage of parenting in multicultural family, and contribute to
smooth child-rearing and life-quality improvement in multicultural family.
