본 연구는 실제로 초등학생들이 학교 밖에서 학습을 어떻게 하고 있으며 학습문화의 특성은 무엇인가를 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 농촌과 도시의 두 초등학교를 대상으로 장․단기 연구학급을 선정하여 학교 밖 학습에 대한 관찰, 심층 면담, 개방형 자기 보고서 등을 통해 분석하였다. 연구 결과 학생들의 학습 행위는 싫증나고 재미없는 숙제, 성적 올리기 중심의 학원학습, 반복과 암기 위주의 암기 반복식 학습 등으로 이루어지고 있었다. 학습문화의 특성은 이끌려 공부하기(학습 주체), 시험 위주와 남이 하는 대로 따라 공부하기(학습 방식), 교과서와 문제집 중심 공부하기(학습 교재), 현실 공간과 사이버 공간에서 공부하기(학습 공간) 등으로 나타났다.
This study aims to find out the learning behavior of elementary school students outside school and the characteristics of their learning culture. To achieve these study purposes, the study proposed the following questions: First, how do elementary school students study in learning spaces outside school? Second, what are the characteristics of elementary school students\' learning culture, which is displayed outside school? To find the answers to these questions, this study designated long- and short-term study groups in elementary schools in an urban area and in a rural area, respectively. The results of the interviews are summarized as follows: First, the students\' learning behavior outside school consisted of memorizing and repetition-oriented learning, accomplishing tiresome and tedious homeworks, and enrolling in private academies so as to get better grades. Second, the characteristics of the subject students\' learning culture included a passive attitude toward studying with respect to the subject of study, exam-oriented study, following their peers\' example with respect to study methods, textbook-based study, and studying in actual spaces and cyber space with respect to study spaces.
