This study analyzes the relationship between the social classes and educational aspiration from a
viewpoint of gender based on the inquiry of high school students. In the aspect of educational aspiration,
boy students want to go to four-years university and girl students want to go to junior college in Japan.
In Korea, however, most of girl students as well as boy students want to go to four-years university or
even to graduate school. School performance is the most important factor in the school decision of
students both in Japan and In Korea. Even when this factor is controlled in regressive analysis, the
influence of class still remains strong in Japan compared to Korea. As a result of this analysis connected
with gender consciousness, it is found that gender socialization is realized according to social classes in
Japan, while meritocratic principle is applied even to girl students regardless of those in Korea. This result
suggests that the levels of consciousness and its aspects by gender are diverse according to society and
culture, although both Japan and Korea are under the influence of confucianism.
