This article is to examine the nature and the role of social education for juvenile delinquents in Korea, and to suggest the strategies for improvement of social education programs, namely delinquency prevention programs and rehabilitation programs. The juvenile delinquents have been alienated from both school education and social education due to their minority of juvenile group and the particularity. Because “democratic humanism” and “everyday life-centered” have been characteristics of social education in Korea. In view of the nature of social education, the juvenile delinquents must be a core target group of the social education. And community-based education in social education has to play an important part to complement education deficiency of the juvenile delinquents in family and school. For reducing juvenile delinquency, it is necessary to develope the prevention programs that give weight to effective early interventions, diversified program tailored to the individual needs of juveniles, assistance to family functions, emphasis of multisystemic treatment, and social welfare for the lower classes. Also for reintegrating the juvenile into community and preventing delinquency, the rehabilitation programs in community-based education should be improved in direction to holistic and intensive approaches, practical use of social workers or counselors, emphasis of a case management, inclusion of the family counseling or parents education, and intensive aftercare services.
