We are living in a society where a variety of values compete with and sometimes collide against each other. One of the function of moral education is to diminish the difference among the various values, and consequently to minimize the social conflicts. A. MacIntyre considers modern society as the era of moral crisis. According to him, to overcome such moral crisis, virtue education is needed. However, it is impossible because we can not provide the coherent list of virtues in the liberal society in which all kinds of virtues have their own value. Hence, he concludes that we have to return to the Thomistic Aristotelenianism. He thinks that, only in that case, virtue education can be succeeded in. This study aims, however, to search for a possibility of liberal virtue education from the theories of two modern liberalists, J. Rawls and J. Raz. Firstly, J. Rawls thinks that liberal state must preserve neutrality in competitive moral doctrines. If we adapt it in moral education, it will be only possible that education based on instrumental rationality or in fact immoral. Consequently, he can not provide a basis for alternative moral education which this study wants. Next, J. Raz defines liberalism as the perfectionist liberalism. It means that the state has right and duty to exclude the bad and to encourage the good. Therefore, we can get ground for the liberal virtue education in school. The democratic community school which is presented by this study has feature of liberalism of J. Raz in that it leads students to the good, and it also has feature of communitarianism since it also gives emphasis on virtue and encumbered ego. Therefore, this school is able to carry out liberal virtue education, which can contribute to relive the social conflicts.
