Recently, there has been a tremendous increase of divorce among couples in Korea. With this tendency, it is necessary to perceive the event of \'divorce\' as one of one\'s life events which might happen to everyone, not just to abnormal or deviant people in society. In fact, what really people in divorce need is an adjustment, not being guilty or blamed. However, social attitudes toward divorce are still very negative and pose great social stigma on the divorcees in Korea. Moreover, in spite of the increase of divorce rate, information regarding the divorce itself and it\'s procedures is not socially fully shared so that many people tend to be very unprepared and even immatured in the process of divorce. Then, the task of \'after-divorce\' adjustment becomes very difficult to family members, particularly children as well as divorcees themselves. Historically, the profession of social work has been working with people who need support and resources in coping difficulties in life. Now it is the time for the profession to help people deal with their personal and sensitive issue, divorce in positive and productive manner and plan new arrangements of life after divorce. For facilitating this work, social work profession in practice and academic fields should be active in responding the issue of divorce with effort of utilizing the professional knowledge base. This study examines divorce systems and current characteristics in Korea and several other countries and explores new alternative for divorce mediating service in social work field.
