본 연구에서 전국적으로 3세 이하의 시각장애 영유아 20명을 직접 방문하여 확대 HOME을 시행한 후 양적, 질적으로 분석한 결과를 토대로 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 이상의 연구결과를 종합해 볼 때, 0～3세용 확대 HOME은 문화권이 다른 미국에서 제작되었지만, 문항이 대체로 양호하고 신뢰할만한 도구로 우리나라에서도 유용하게 사용될 수 있는 가능성이 있음을 시사하는 것으로 결론지을 수 있다. 그러나 연구대상의 수가 너무 적기 때문에 성별, 연령별, 시각장애별, 지역별로 조절할 수 없었으므로 이를 일반화시키기 위해서는 반복 연구가 이루어지기를 바란다. 특히 확대 HOME을 우리나라에서 표준화된 도구로 사용하게 되기까지는 본 연구에서 선정된 문항을 기초로 새로운 문항이 보완되어야 하며 계속 타당화 연구가 이루어져야 하겠다.
A supportive home environment must be provided to assist infants in the first three years of their life when brain development is at its peak. It is particularly important to foster specialized techniques that would assist in development and education programs for visually impaired children, and accurately assess their home environment. However to date, little research has been conducted in Korea with respect to these techniques. Therefore, this study investigated the suitability of using the Extended Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (Extended HOME) inventory in Korea to assess the home environment of visually impaired infants. After the inventory was translated and adjusted for cultural differences, Extended HOME inventory was applied to a national sample of 20 visually impaired infants to assess their home environment. The technique involved investigating the quality of the infants\' home environment in detail, diagnosing in subscale and scoring the overall results. It was concluded from the study that this technique could be applied in Korea. The Extended HOME inventory could be used by early childhood specialists to assess and reflect on infants\' earliest environment and assist in designing individualized education program to address any weaknesses or issues identified by the technique.
