본 연구의 목적은 한국과 미국 유아의 가정 내 전자미디어 사용 실태와 이에 관한 어머니의 인식, 개 입방법, 요구가 어떠한 특성과 차이를 보이는가를 살펴봄으로써 전자미디어 이용에 대한 프로그램 개발 의 기초 자료를 제공하는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구를 위하여 한국의 경인지역과 미국의 중동부지역에 위치 한 유아교육기관에 재원하고 있는 만 4, 5세 유아를 둔 어머니 217명을 대상으로 설문조사 하였다. 연구 결과, 한국유아는 미국유아에 비해 TV는 보다 빨리, 컴퓨터는 보다 늦게 경험하기 시작하여 보다 장시간 지속하여 이용하고 있었다. 한국어머니는 미국어머니에 비해 자녀의 전자미디어 이용 지도에 어려움을 경험하고 있었고 부모 변인 외에 또래나 법규 등의 요인도 함께 자녀의 전자미디어 이용에 작용한다고 인 식하여 차이를 보였다. 본 연구는 가정 내 유아의 전자미디어 사용의 실태와 어머니 인식의 특성을 파악 하여 기초자료를 마련하였으며, 이러한 결과는 가정 내 유아의 바람직한 전자미디어 교육프로그램의 개 발과 후속연구의 필요성을 시사한다.
This study analyses and compares the ways 3- and 4-year-old children use TV and computers at home and the types of perceptions and intervention their mothers use in relation to the children’s electronic media use in Korea and the United States. A survey was administered to 200 mothers in Korea and 370 mothers in the northeastern United States; responses were analyzed through chi-square test and t-test. The results of the study are as follows. First, Korean children use TV and computer at home for a longer time than American children. Second, Korean children use TV and computers primarily with their parents or peers, but American children use electronic media with their parents or on their own. Finally, most of the Korean mothers experienced difficulties in guiding their children\'s electronic media use by contrast American mothers tended not to have any difficulties in making decision in relation to their children’s use of TV and computer. The results suggest the need of media education programs intended for parents as well as young children.
