The regulations of the management of the Buddhist monks for
protection duty(守直僧徒) at the History Archives of Mt. Odae were
enacted in 1606. The fixed number of the Buddhist monks for
protection duty was forty, twenty of them were from Gangneung(江陵)
and the others were from Yangyang(襄陽). In 1686, the fixed number
of the Buddhist monks for protection duty was increased by Sixty(30
from Gangneung and 30 from Yangyang).
The Buddhist monks for protection duty had two parts. One was
the watching and protecting of the Archives’ building. And the other
was the carrying the books of the Archives to another place for the
purposes of the airing of books and of repairing of the Archives’
building.
There were three problems of the Buddhist monks for protection
duty at the History Archives of Mt. Odae. First, besides the protection
duty of Archives’ building, some other duties were imposed on the
Buddhist monks for protection duty. Second, the financial help didn’t
given to the Buddhist monks for protection duty as the regulation.
These problems led to the lack of the numbers of Buddhist monks for protection duty. Third, the Buddhist monks from Yangyang considered
that the protection duty of the Archives’ building was a hard work
because they must come from such a great distance. So they made
every possible effort for exemption from the protection duty of the
Archives’ building, but their attempt ended in failure.
