이 논문은 교육사회학이 분과학문으로서 고유한 정체를 정립해 지녔는지 미국과 한국에서 서술된 역사를 살피며 검토하였다. 교육사회학의 역사 서술은 ``교육적 사회학``과 ``교육의 사회학``을 구분하여 이루어지는데, 교육 진영(특히 한국)에서는 전자에서 사회학 진영에서는 후자에서 정통성을 찾는다. 이렇게 서로 달리 이루어진 역사 서술을 함께 검토하였다. 검토 결과 두 진영의 역사 서술 어디에서도 교육사회학이 독립적인 학문의 위상을 확보했다고 볼 수 있는 단서를 확인할 수 없었다. 한국 교육사회학계에서는 교육적 사회학의 전통에서 교육사회학의 독자성을 찾는 경향을 보이지만, 교육적 사회학의 역사에서 사회학으로부터 독립을 이룬 사실(史實)을 찾을 수 없었다. 교육의 사회학 전통을 잇는 데서 정체성을 찾는 사회학 진영의 역사 서술에서는 교육사회학을 사회학의 한 하위 분야로 규정하여, 그 독립성을 애초부터 인정하지 않았다. 결국 교육사회학의 역사를 검토한 결과는 그 정체와 관련하여 근본적으로 새로운 모색이 필요하다는 점을 시사한다.
The article tried to identify the disciplinary identity of the sociology of education by examining the history of the field as written in South Korea and U.S. The identity is supposed to be built and revealed through the history. The examination is done for the two diverged descriptions of the history: the descriptions from the viewpoint of educators and of sociologists. Disclosed as a result is that the identity of the sociology of education is murky. The assertion by some Korean scholars that the identity can be constructed on the foundation of ``educational sociology`` is also found to be groundless. What the result asks seems to be a fresh start to build a new discipline on one of the oldest field, education.
