Senior population growth, the advent of a knowledge based society, and changes in the labor market are trends that call for better offerings of elderly education for the aging society. In particular, we need to improve the quality of elderly education targeting the growing elderly population that is increasingly educated in higher levels of academics, with strong economic power, and who are highly productive. Germany has already adopted education programs for seniors as an extended form of education at several educational institutions such as Volkshochschule and Universitat, and the government is highly supportive of elderly education in its policies and administration. In Korea, elderly education is yet unavailable at high level education institutions, but the surge in senior population levels with high academic qualifications will demand elderly education at advanced educational institutions where seniors will be able to develop professional qualities in various areas. In regard to these changes, we need to improve elderly education in Korea by introducing the auditor system of German universities, operating educational programs in consideration of the characteristics of different groups of elders for their reemployment after retirement, self development and social participation, providing governmental supports in finance and administration to seniors’ learning clubs, and expanding elders’ international exchange through global networks. And in light of these changes in society Korean universities should not limit their role in the education of young people but play a leading role as an advanced base for promoting elderly education.
