The purpose of this study is to analyze the aging and the elderly education in France and to investigate some possible ways to apply them to the aging society in Korea. To old people, the provision of educational opportunities is not just a matter of education but a matter of social welfare for enhancing their quality of life. That is, elderly education is now an essential requirement for elderly welfare. France is known as the most gradually aging society in the world. France conciders taking care of old adults who are in theirs life’s “third age” as major concern for their social policy. By analyzing elderly education through a lifelong education institution in France, this study aimed to determine the direction and possibility of elderly education optimal for a lifelong education institution in Korea. In France, education for the aged is not limited to elderly education but is expanding its domains to education for social activities such as elderly vocational education, continuing education, and volunteer service education. In conclusion, the ultimate objective of elderly education is to promote elders’ enhanced quality of life, creative thinking, and atmosphere of voluntary learning. In achieving the goal, society members’ idea is important but what is more important is the will to attain society where education and welfare become one through the activation of elderly education and volunteer service activities.
