양적 조사는 통계를 바탕으로 분석하는 조사를 말하며 객관적이고 일반화할 수 있는 가능성이 높다는 장점이 있다. 질적 조사는 주관적이며 심층적으로 분석한다는 장점이 있으나 일반화할 수 있는 가능성이 낮고 연구기간이 길며 연구자의 편견을 배제하기 어렵다는 단점이 있다. 이러한 두 연구방법을 양분하기보다는 동일선상에 놓고 비교하는 것이 바람직하다. 양적연구에서 깊이 분석하지 못한 내용을 질적 연구가 보완해 줄 수 있고, 양적 연구는 주관적이기 쉬운 질적 연구에 객관적인 근거를 제공하여 질적 연구를 보완해 줄 수 있기 때문이다. 결국 두 연구방법을 상호 보완하여 활용함으로써 신뢰성 있는 정보를 제공할 수 있고 또한 연구의 범위와 깊이를 확장할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
"Quantitative study, a research method that analyses social status or phenomena based on statistics, has merits of being objective and can be generalized. Qualitative study can be praised for its subjective feature and in-depth analysis, but has demerits that the feasibility of generation is low, takes long time to perform, and its hard to exclude prejudice of researcher. It is ideal to compare two methods on the same line. Qualitative study can fill up the part which could not be fully analysed in quantitative study, and the other way the quantitative study can supplement qualitative study in the way of providing objectivity with qualitative study, which easily can be subjective. Therefore, it is expected that the supplementary use of both study methods makes us have meaningful study result and enlarge limit and depth of social study.
