The purpose of this paper is to introduce the current status and suggest desirable directions
for researches in Korean language education (hereafter KLE) focused on interdisciplinary
research such as reading in KLE and other subject-matter education or pedagogics. The
researches of KLE has increased greatly in recent 20 years. There are almost 150 doctoral
dissertations and so many books regarding introduction to the KLE or subordinate areas such
as speaking and listening, reading, writing, pedagogic grammar and literature educations
including Korean versions of translation.
This study, on the whole, consist of three parts. I tried to explain briefly (1) the history of
KLE, (2) the current status of Researches of KLE focused on reading education, (3)
interrelationship between KLE and other subject-matter education. KLE has so close relations
with many subject-matter areas, which means there are so many tasks and researches we have
to do interdisciplinary. In this context, we need to pay more attention to the interrelationship
between KLE and other education area. In particular, we need to develop Special education
programs for the gifted, which has not been developed efficiently compared to mathematics or
science field. Most researchers agree that we should work more on the language development
for learners in KLE including comprehension and production of text and discourse. Soon, we
will see a good deal of emphasis on the essential education related to 4 basic skills of listening,
speaking, reading and writing in every subject-matter areas also. Especially, the drive to
combine reading and literature will be stressed in many levels of education.
