This study was conducted to find the overall status of in-service training and of childcare
center-based supervision (CCS) as well as principal\'s recognition about the CCS, and to use
these findings to help tailor more suitable programs for the CCS. Survey questions were
developed to answer the research questions, and principals from 115 childcare centers in Korea
participated in the study. For a conclusion, the study found that the in-service training for
teachers at the childcare centers was limited on its extent due to the lack of time allocation for
the training by the childcare centers. Only the half of the childcare centers that participated in
this survey indicated that they practiced the CCS, and the absence of the CCS in the other half
of the childcare centers was mainly caused by the fact that the principals were short of
understanding on how to practice the CCS.In addition, most of the CCS that was being
practiced was taught by teachers who attended to the training programs in third-party
institutions. Furthermore, teachers were usually assumed to obtain a concurrence from
principals before the CCS was actually performed. The study found that it was necessary that
principals at the childcare centers appreciated the benefits of reducing the stress and pressure
from instruction commitments as well as the amounts of daily duties for teachers and of
helping them spend more time to explore new information and teaching techniques. Based on
these findings several ideas were suggested to increase the utilization of the CCS.
