This study examines the attitude of college students toward the handicapped and aims to offer
basic materials for establishing policies on the education and for the handicapped in general so as to encourage successful rehabilitation of handicapped children and young adults and thus foster social integration.
The research method has been formulated as follows the research target is college students cu
rrently enrolled at 4 national universities located in Busan and Gyungnam region. The questionn
aire consists of 23 questions in open, closed, and hybrid types. The elements of questions involved cognitive (information and knowledge), justice (emotion), and behaviour (behavioural tendency), rehabilitation and integration of the handicapped. The main research findings can be summarized as follows: 1) In terms of cognitive attitude of college students, there is considerable lack of objective information and practical knowledge on handicap; 2) The emotion and reaction tow ard handicap (or the handicapped) is generally negative; 3) The behavioural tendency toward the handicapped is very rejective and closed; 4) In order to promote rehabilitation and social integration of the handicapped have been the handicapped wanted proactive social participation and ! the non-handicapped perceived the elimation of prejudice and discrimination as the most important elements. In addition, the attitude toward the handicapped prevalent in our current society is very negative but it is expected to improve in the future. Of particular note, in the group element where a question was asked on abortion, there were absolute affirmative reponses from nearly everyone, displaying no significant statistical difference between religious or non-religious respondents. Among colleges under survey, there was also no significant statistical difference between those that offer special educational program and those that do not offer special education program, prompting an opportunity to mule over the role and task of the special education
