This paper critically examines the anti-transhumanist arguments put forward by Francis Fukuyama and Michael Sandel. I first tried to provide the reasons for thinking that transhumanism, which encourages human enhancement using cutting-edge scientific technology, may turn out to be one of the most dangerous ideas in the world, as suggested by Fukuyama. However, I argue that their argument, even though rhetorically very persuading, fails to provide a conclusive reason to disapprove human ‘enhancement’ in general on ethical grounds. In particular, I put Sandel’s argument from ‘giftedness’ under a very careful examination to show this. On the other hand, I think that, even though Sandel’s argument is not so convincing as an argument against human enhancement per se, there is a way of interpreting it in a benevolent way. On this interpretation, he is trying to suggest that there lies very problematic liberalist conception of individual autonomy and right under our way of life seeking for human enhancement, to which he has ultimately been raising an objection.
