Korean Society rapidly goes toward multicultural society as international marriage and migrant
workers continuously increase. This study attempts to look closely at the academic performance of
children of international migrants, who play significant roles in smooth transition toward multicultural
society. For this, we adopted qualitative methods including participant observation and in-depth
interview. We collected data from one elementary school in Seoul, one in Incheon, and two in North
Cholla Province. In addition, we visited and collected data from a center for foreign migrant workers.
We tried to figure out children of migrants' school adjustment and academic performance such as
class participation, everyday classroom life and support of parents. This study intended to avoid
simple generalization and shed lights on the variety of their adjustments. Children of migrants show
various performance depending on the length of stay in Korea, academic subject matters, parents'
supports, existence of supporting program of school and neighborhood and their participation in those
programs. In conclusion, we suggest that the support for the children of migrants' academic
performance should be executed at multiple dimension, based on such understanding.
