Science writing is one of the major themes for research in science education, as well as one
of the important subjects of science. The purpose of this study was to examine some of the
teaching/learning objectives, content, and methods of science writing, and to suggest a plan for
the subjects of science writing. The teaching/learning objectives and content for science writing
were determined based on the results of a questionnaire survey, and on the opinions suggested
by the secondary science teachers who participated in the survey. In addition, some
teaching/learning methods of science writing were identified by analyses of the related
literature. This paper describes 12 teaching/learning objectives for science writing, and
teaching/learning content that consists of 81 items, which are organized into 24 areas. The
middle school science teachers recognised that it is important to teach practical writing skills
as well as the nature of science writing, science writing in the classroom, and research report
writing. They also suggested that thinking skills, science learning, and scientific writing skills
were the principal teaching objectives for the teaching/learning of science writing. Examples of
subjects for science writing are also suggested in the paper.
