14 Pages
7 142-155 (14 pages)
This study explores the notion of writer identity in the construction of the Statement of Purpose (SOP). A total of five SOPs written by two Korean graduate students were analyzed by the researcher; in addition, the SOPs were reviewed by two native speaker TESOL professors who provided open-ended comments afterwards. Findings of the study indicate that the writers' identities were multiple and contradicting throughout the texts. Furthermore, while the native speaker professors felt that the... -

9 253-263 (11 pages)
As social studies teacher educators we have a responsibility to prepare future teachers who are globally aware, culturally and linguistically responsive, and pedagogically reflective. This study seeks to better understand how a collaborative practicum experience with a local immigrant English/Civics community program is preparing pre-service social studies teachers (PSSTs) for their future work with culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) secondary school students by asking the following... -

3 184-195 (12 pages)
in many instances, especially in official curriculum documents, Global Citizenship Education (GCE) tends to ignore critical engagement with ethics and complexity that inform global inequities worldwide, and often fails to achieve the self-reflective political consciousness called forth by a critical GCE. In this paper, we compare conceptualizations of GCE in the Alberta Social Studies curriculum, Canada, and in the Scottish national curriculum, Curriculum for Excellence. We consider the extent t... -

11 Pages
2 173-183 (11 pages)
This article revisits findings from a historical content analysis examining the pedagogy of Social Education, the practitioner journal for the National Council of the Social Studies. I argue that as Social Education may extend nationalist and neoliberal discourses of global citizenship education, global educators must employ critical lenses in order to disrupt these discourses that dominate teaching about the world in secondary education. Using China as a reference point, the paper focuses... -

He then historically situates three scholars?John Dewey, Paulo Freire, and Michel Foucault?who have been instrumental in the formulation of his philosophy of education. Next, he shares how the philosophies of these three scholars...
